The Way Home

Get in this car and let me drive you home.
It's getting dark and I won't have you walking that far alone.
Throw my guitar in the back, now there's plenty of room.
I've been working up the nerve to get you alone.
It seems we always have different places we need to go.
Any time I get with you, it ends too soon.
It doesn't matter which road we take.
I just don't want you to feel alone.
You'll never take me out of my way.
Your way is my way, my way home.
We can listen to the radio.
We can try our best to sound like Stevie Nicks and Bono.
And I'll take the long way, if you don't mind taking it with me.
We might have to stop at the tracks for a train.
My windshield wipers may not work if it starts to rain.
But I don't mind the wait if you're in that passenger seat.
It doesn't matter which road we take.
I just don't want you to feel alone.
You'll never take me out of my way.
Your way is my way, my way home.
I won't lie, there've been nights when I can't sleep.
I head to town, and I hit every street.
I pass your house and wonder if you're awake.
You probably think I'm too weird.
You probably can't wait to get the hell away from here.
But I'll take your hand, take you anywhere.
I only need one hand to steer.
It doesn't matter which road I take.
I just don't wanna be alone.
You'll never take me out of your way.
Cuz your way is my way, my way home.
Yeah, your way is my way, my way home.
On nights when I can't sleep, I have to hit your street to get back home.

I Want You Here
04:59

I was on the last boat out of Chinatown when I started missing you.
I just spent all my money, but I would have rather spent the time with you.
I heard last night you couldn't sleep, you should have jumped on the train with me.
But now I'm in another state, a Windy City with a great lake, down by the Pier.
And I wish you were here.
I passed the House of Blues, and couldn't help thinking, one day I'll play there with you.
We'll take the town by storm, and it won't be long before we make our big debut.
But now I'm running for the train and no one told me it was gonna rain tonight.
I wouldn't mind so much getting wet, if it was your hand I was holding, I'd be alright.
But you're not here...
And I wish you were here!
Would you dance with me, dance with me in the puddles right here?
Have no fear!
If we're too late and miss our train, we'll stay right here.
We'll laugh through the night. With you, I'd be alright.
I really want you here tonight.
And when I'm on the road, I see sights that I'd like to show you.
I play 20 Questions by myself, but I'd rather use them to help me get to know you.
When I cross the county lines and see the road signs saying Come Back Soon...
I know that I will, but I won't turn around until my right hand seat is filled with you.
I want you here...
And I wish you were here!
It's getting late, keep me awake. Navigate and I'll steer.
Have no fear!
If we miss our turn or crash and burn, at least you'd be near.
We'd laugh through the night, with you I'd be alright.
I really need you here tonight.
I was on the last boat out of Chinatown when I realized I should've called you.
Now you're not here.
I wish you were here.
I really want you here tonight.

If I Knew You Then
03:51

I wish I knew you when we were kids.
Back before things got too complicated.
Before any one of us had learned to play guitar.
And when we rode our bikes, we weren't allowed to go very far.
Beanie Babies and cartoons.
I'd play Pokemon with you.
Oh, the trouble we'd get into, if I knew you way back then.
I wish I knew you when we were younger.
Back when Lunchables could solve all our hunger.
I'd be in kindergarten, you'd be in second grade.
And when the game was tag, I'd be it when we played.
And I'd follow you wherever you'd go.
So that you wouldn't be alone.
Until my mom turned the porch light on.
I wish I knew you when we were kids.
Thank goodness that you're here.
Thank God I have you now.
If you knew me way back then, you may not still be around.
Thank goodness you're alive, and at least for now I have you by my side.
I hope I know you when we're old.
We'll be like folks in all those stories we've been told.
Hanging out on a park bench when it's hard to move along.
I hope you're not too arthritic to play me a song.
I hope you don't go before I do.
Cuz it'd be boring without you.
And even if we're 92, I hope we act like we're still kids.

Mr. Fix-It
04:55
|
|||
I'm sitting here with you at 1am
When I really should be getting some sleep.
There's too much awkwardness between us now.
Too many promises that you couldn't keep.
I've got my own life, you've got yours too.
At first I thought we'd work out as one.
But I've been watching all the things you do
And it's plain to see that you are done.
And I'm too young to waste precious time
With someone who doesn't wanna be mine...
You're a tool but I can't fix this.
And you're a fool to think you'll never miss this.
Maybe some day you'll change, but I can't wait for that day.
So watch me walk away.
I'm calling it off today.
Cuz I can't fix you.
And all my friends say that they were right
That you wouldn't last too long with me.
And I'm too tired now to put up a fight
So I say, let's just let things be.
Cuz I'm too young to waste precious time
With someone who doesn't wanna be mine...
You're a tool but I can't fix this.
And you're a fool to think you'll never miss this.
Maybe some day you'll change, but I can't wait for that day.
So watch me walk away.
I'm calling it off today.
Cuz I can't fix you.
Broken bonds and broken hearts are fine.
But I can't mend yours, I only have time for mine.
You're a tool but I can't fix this.
And you're a fool to think you'll never miss this.
Maybe some day you'll change, but I can't wait for that day.
So watch me walk away.
I'm calling it off today.
Cuz I can't fix you.

Two Weeks
05:18
|
|||
You don't think about me when you go away.
But I still think about you every day.
When I'm stuck at home, I wonder why
You're the one I never can say goodbye to.
Tomorrow I'm heading out, gonna hit the road.
And when I get back, well I don't know
If I'll still feel the same about me and you.
But to get away for a while is what I have to do.
When you're alone, maybe you'll think about me
And when I get home, maybe you'll say you can't live without me
I'll give you two weeks, and if I'm still in love with you
I'll give it two weeks so I can figure out what I'm gonna do
My heart speaks but you don't hear it the way I do.
I'll give it two weeks and I'll pray I won't still love you.
In two weeks...
The last time I came home, you held me tight
It felt so warm inside standing in the light.
But now when you come around, it's like I'm hardly here.
Don't feel the love between us, there's only air.
When I'm on the road, maybe I'll leave you behind
And when I get home, maybe I won't change my mind...

Invincible
04:17
|
|||
If I step back from this ledge, my friend
Would you be there for me in the end?
Said you'd never give up on me, but that's a lie.
Well, I know no one's invincible
But I sure gave it my best try.
Would it be so hard just to say goodbye?
If I had to go, this is where I'd want to go.
Cuz no one knows me here. So no one would shed a tear.
Though things would be better by tomorrow
But tomorrow turned into a year.
Hide it with a smile, but I've been living with doubt and fear.
But you ignore me when I'm falling down
Don't pick me up when I've long since hit the ground.
And I'm calling to you but you don't even hear.
So if I have to go, this is where I want to go.
No one knows me here. So no one would shed a tear.
Life may cut, may scar, and it might sting.
But if you make it through this, you can make it through anything.
So if you want to go, you should know you're loved more than you'll ever know.
When it feels like you're nothing here, take a step back from that ledge and you'll see, I'm here.
And you're invincible, my dear.

Love Like Mine
04:32
|
|||
My fuel is low, my gears wound down.
But I won't get stuck in this stupid town.
Soon I'm getting out of here
And I'll see you in my rearview mirror.
Maybe someday you'll say I was the one that got away.
And maybe if we get to that time, you'll wish you had a love like mine.
I'm packing up my things and clothes.
If I'll come back, God only knows.
I'm leaving later in the spring.
I'm leaving you and everything.
Maybe someday I'll stay, and I won't have to go away.
But I guess we'll never reach that time. I guess you'll never know a love like mine.
I'm glad I now see you for what you are.
You're just a boy, you're not a star.
And me, I know I'm only a girl.
But I would have given you the world.
Maybe someday you'll say I was the one that got away.
Me, I know I'll be just fine. But you'll never know a love like mine.
