I wish I knew you when we were kids.
Back before things got too complicated.
Before any one of us had learned to play guitar.
And when we rode our bikes, we weren't allowed to go very far.
Beanie Babies and cartoons.
I'd play Pokemon with you.
Oh, the trouble we'd get into, if I knew you way back then.

I wish I knew you when we were younger.
Back when Lunchables could solve all our hunger.
I'd be in kindergarten, you'd be in second grade.
And when the game was tag, I'd be it when we played.
And I'd follow you wherever you'd go.
So that you wouldn't be alone.
Until my mom turned the porch light on.
I wish I knew you when we were kids.

Thank goodness that you're here.
Thank God I have you now.
If you knew me way back then, you may not still be around.
Thank goodness you're alive, and at least for now I have you by my side.

I hope I know you when we're old.
We'll be like folks in all those stories we've been told.
Hanging out on a park bench when it's hard to move along.
I hope you're not too arthritic to play me a song.
I hope you don't go before I do.
Cuz it'd be boring without you.
And even if we're 92, I hope we act like we're still kids.
